Website Downtime: What to Expect If a Server or Network Issue Occurs If a Data Center Becomes Unavailable

If the MI4P websites experience downtime, below is information to help answer some of your questions.

Website Downtime: What to Expect

MI4P websites may have some moments of downtime. However, these instances are very rare and almost always solved by something simple, such as restarting the server that the websites reside on. Actual significant infrastructure downtime is very unusual.

If a Server or Network Issue Occurs

  • Hardware issue: Service may continue without a noticeable interruption, or restoration could take several hours.
  • Software issue: Some issues resolve quickly. More complex issues may take several hours to diagnose and resolve.
  • Network issue: Service may recover quickly or take several hours to restore. Some network issues require coordination between our third-party hosting provider and other network providers.

Brief interruptions can happen without anyone noticing because systems are designed to recover automatically. A website visitor may experience only a momentary delay, if anything at all. Even these small events receive attention from system administrators to help keep the website running reliably.

If a Data Center Becomes Unavailable

A major data center outage (VERY RARE!) would require restoring service at another location. This could take half a day or longer, depending on the situation.

As part of the move, your website’s DNS records would need to point to the new location. If MI4P manages your DNS, we would make those changes. If you manage your own DNS, we would provide the information you need and help you update the records.

We’ll share updates as we learn more about the cause and expected restoration time.
