If the MI4P websites experience downtime, below is information to help answer some of your questions.

Website Downtime

MI4P websites may have some moments of downtime. However, these instances are very rare and almost always solved by something simple, such as restarting the server that the websites reside on. Actual significant infrastructure downtime is very unusual.

'What If' scenarios

What happens if the server goes down in the data center?

  • If it’s a hardware issue: Expect resolution to be measured somewhere between seamless to hours.
  • If it’s a software issue: Expect resolution to be measured somewhere between seamless to hours. However, there’s also a lot more moving parts, so it could be measured in hours. (This would be rare.)
  • If it’s a network issue: Expect resolution somewhere between seamless to hours, but network issues often extend beyond the scope of what Rackspace is able to address on it’s own.

These interruptions happen more than one might realize, but most of the time we don’t know about them because they're set up to automatically resolve themselves. From a web visitor’s view, they’re nothing more than a tiny hiccup, if they’re noticed at all. From a system administrator’s view, though, these are the microscopic type of things that always need to get some attention.

What happens if the data center is wiped out?

  • Restoring to a different data center is going to take half a day or longer.
  • One of the biggest things we’d need to do is adjust DNS settings to point to the new data center.
    • If we manage the DNS records for you, that's easy-peezy.
    • If you are managing your own DNS records, then we can help you along to get things pointing to the new data center.
