Every so often we get a call from a customer that goes something like this: "I just received a renewal notice for my domain name, but I thought you guys were handling my registration for me. Should I renew my domain?" If you get such a letter you should, of course, carefully read the letter. But in our experience the answer is almost always, "No, don't sign the letter. It's another registrar trying to gain your business with some tricky language." Here's an example of one such letter from the Domain Registry of America:
Domain Registry of America Sample Letter (full size letter in a new window)
Let's pick apart a few of the details of the letter. There's a line that says, "Failure to renew your domain name by the expiration date may result in a loss of your online identity making it difficult for your customers and friends to locate you on the Web." This is true, but you are under no obligation to renew your domain name with the Domain Registry of America or any other such entity. Next, there's a line (highlighted in yellow in our example) that says, "This notice is not a bill, it is rather an easy means of payment should you decide to switch your domain name registration to the Domain Registry of America." Your domain name can be registered with any registrar. In fact, if you allow MarketingIdeasForPrinters.com to handle the details of your domain name registration we'll ensure your domain never expires, and you can then disregard notices such as the example from the Domain Registry of America. If you have any questions regarding your domain name registration, please don't hesitate to contact us.
